Frequently Asked Questions
Why do people choose to use Robin instead of Firefox, Chrome or Safari?
Learning from our early beta users the results are surprising. Our early users aren't leaving our competitors entirely yet, instead they are finding that Robin is really good for providing full access to your social networking services in a single and unified way. We hope to see the same experience happen across web apps when we offer Smart Bar app integration.
Robin is slow, crashes or stalls. Am I doing something wrong?
No, it isn't you. Robin is in Beta and meant for people that can stomach the changes and problems that will persist in our early versions. So if the app stalls, crashes or feels like it is running slow simply force quit by typing Option+Command+Esc at the same time on your keyboard. Restart the app and see if the issue still persists. If so you may want to file a bug request so we are aware of the issue. Check back periodically by launching Robin and selecting "Check for update" from the Application Menu. We have many known issues about Adobe Flash Player and various Javascript incompatibilities we are working on. Thanks for for patience.
It won't run. What are the system requirements?
You must have at least Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard in order to install the browser. We recommend at least 1GB of memory, 1024x768 and a 1Ghz Intel or A5 processor. While Robin will probably under conditions less than what we've stated, if you want at least decent performance we recommending sticking to the minimum requirements.
Can it run on iOS, Windows or Android?
Not yet. We are focused on making the best web browser we can on OS X. Once we've completed that task we'll consider additional opportunities on alternative operating systems.
How do I install web apps into Smart Bar?
Visit the Web App Shop to select from up to 50 web apps. The ability for anyone to create, deploy and install web applications into their browser in a safe and secure way requires some complex orchestration on our part. We've decided to launch a Beta so we can work out the fundamentals of the web browsing and multitasking before we are going to allow this added functionality by third-parties.
Keep hearing about Webkit. What is that?
Webkit is the rendering engine Apple had created that powers Safari and Chrome as well as most any Mac app that leverages HTML to display content like Mail. So at its core our just as good a browser as those mentioned. We've created our own user interface from scratch. Many other products simply leverage what Webkit provides, we decided to forego that stuff in order to create our own unique UI framework. It means that Robin doesn't need to compete on rendering on HTML and instead and put our efforts into creating innovative features that are not dependent on what Webkit provides. While we will take a hit on performance now, later we'll be able to accomplish tasks that other browsers won't be able to match.
I like the Smart Bar but it gets in the way. Can I hide it?
Yes, the Smart Bar can be hidden, toggled or remain on-screen. We are considering alternative placements, animations, and sizes but nothing has been added beyond what is accessible in the Beta. We offer the ability to hide or remove apps from the Smart Bar in the Beta.
